Wrestling with paint is my main concern, but ideas will often attach themselves to a series of paintings until a theme emerges. My subject is human nature. Past projects have been about the social workings of a suburban community, the evolutionary origins of religion, and the feedback loops of social networks which create identity. These earnest studies are lightened by a focus on absurdity; for instance, my Bible Stories, (all genuine), are so horrifying that they’re funny - but their serious aim is to show the danger of condoning beliefs which are based on misinformation, on feeling rather than fact.
The current Zoom series explores the uncanny valley between our private and public selves.
